News of Bernard Madoff receiving 150 years in prison left some of his former Southwest Florida investors pleased Monday. “It’s OK with me, as long as he dies in jail,” said Walter Cahn, 83, of Marco Island. More than 30 Lee and Collier County residents unknowingly contributed to Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, which swindled investors out of an estimated $65 billion.

Sandy Gast opened up shop in the Center of Bonita Springs in 1988 when the shopping center was all new concrete and stucco. After more than 20 years of business, the center at the northwest corner of U.S. 41 and Bonita Beach Road started to look its age with the parking lot full of potholes and wiry trees and storefronts that were “outdated,” said Gast, owner of Jean Nicole Hair Salons Inc., in the center’s west end. “The original owners didn’t put much into it,” Gast said.

Storm clouds — a sign of summer and a reflection of turbulent times for Southwest Florida businesses. Marilyn Hankins felt like a storm blew through her women’s boutique last week leaving just two and a half racks of clothes and scores of empty hangers. After seven years and several setbacks, Back of the Bay, Too has gone out of business. “This used to be a beautiful store,” Hankins said after selling one customer about $4,000 worth of clothes for $300. The recession was the final straw in two years of struggle.
