Hearing set Wednesday in Naples for public comment on runway extension

The Naples Airport Authority wants to hear from the public about a proposed runway expansion. A public hearing is set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Norris Community Center, 755 Eighth Ave. S., Naples. The 73-page draft shows that there are no adverse environmental effects as a result of the proposed runway expansion. It also shows a noise reduction due to the runway’s longer takeoff length.

Commuter service awaits federal approval to start serving Naples airport

Gulf Coast Airways is one step closer to offering commuter air service at Naples Municipal Airport. The U.S. Department of Transportation granted commuter status on Aug. 20 to Gulf Coast Airways, which has operated charter service from the Naples airport.

The EDC is championing an effort to bring the Maine-based Jackson Laboratory to eastern Collier to help move the local economy away from a sputtering base of agriculture, real estate and tourism. Considerable criticism has been lodged at the EDC and economic assumptions used by its consultants to project that 11,000 jobs could be created through development of a biomedical park over a 23-year build-out. The concept is that Jackson, a nonprofit genetics research institute, can be an anchor to attract a university program, hospital, other medical-related entities and commercial businesses.
